The Reel

Standard sets with Ms on the left and Fs on the right.​ Set are divided into six couples, with couples 1 and 4 starting the dance. This means that when a couple reaches the top they must wait for two repeats without dancing at all before they can begin as a dancing couple.

  1. Dancing couple turn each other before casting off one place behind their own lines.

  2. Using an elbow grip, the dancing couple swing with their left hands, three-quarter turn.

  3. The couples then swing their first corners (M1 with F3 and F1 with M2) with their right arms.

  4. Couples catch each others left arms in the middle and swing a three-quarter turn.

  5. Dancing couple swing their second corners (M1 with F2 and F1 with M3), and end up facing their first corners again.

  6. The dancing couple now sets and turns their first corners.

  7. Dancing couple sets and turns their second corners.

  8. The dancing couple now does as figure of eight with the two corners they have just danced with.

  9. The couple now end up one place down from where they have started, but on the wrong side.

  10. Dancing couple must turn one and a half times in the middle before casting off.

  11. Repeat 2 - 9.
